Jesse Leyva

Dr. Jesse Leyva, Professor and Conductor

Jesse Leyva, DMA, is a conductor, musician, and professor who most recently served as director of bands and associate professor of music for the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University. He earned a BA in music education at California State University, Stanislaus, and then an MA in instrumental conducting from San Jose State University. Dr. Jesse Leyva then earned his doctor of musical arts degree with a wind conducting emphasis from Arizona State University. He has belonged to numerous professional organizations, including the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, the National Band Association, and the College Band Directors National Association.

Leyva's music teaching career began in the California public schools, first as Director of Bands at El Cerrito High School and later at De La Salle High School. He then pursued advanced degrees in conducting at San Jose State University and Arizona State University, serving as a graduate teaching assistant at both institutions. Dr. Leyva has been a part of respected university music faculties in Illinois, Ohio, and Arkansas; where ensembles under his direction were recognized for outstanding musicianship and audience engagement.
